Well, our school year has drawn to a close and oh, what an adventure it was! As I have posted before, our family is HUGELY into novel studies. Much of our daily learning is focused on classic works of literature, especially since we host a small literature class in our home. I love diving into new adventures with my kids, sharing stories that I loved as a child, or discovering something new together.
This year was a new adventure. A dear friend had suggested a wonderful book to us, and as I tore through the first few pages last spring, (I couldn’t put it down!), I just knew that we needed to study it this school year!
And so began our adventures with The Swiss Family Robinson!
Our journey began with the gripping tale of a wonderful, God fearing family, ship wrecked and abandoned by the crew they had trusted. Bravely, this family rallied together and managed to get on shore of a nearby, deserted island. The story that unfolds here after is equally engrossing, entertaining, and heart wrenching. Using only their knowledge, faith in God, and love for one another, this family not only survives their ordeal, they also thrive and grow closer as a family. It’s amazing!
Finding those little golden nuggets (key points) in each chapter by which to base our cross curricular studies was not a difficult task. This book is loaded with wonderment! Our little class conducted buoyancy experiments, planted and maintained a class garden (that I sadly forgot to water), took a nature walk and documented new plant life at our local botanical garden, and even went on an archery field trip! We held class parties, made clay pots, and completed numerous art projects and science projects. And, as is our tradition, we finished it off by having a movie party where we compare and contrast the movie to the book. (they are crazy different by the way). It was a wonderful adventure! And while we didn’t complete everything I had planned, we still had a ball! I can’t wait until our next adventure!
Friends, we have enjoyed our literature studies so much, that I created ebooks for each one. I am also working on three more that will be in the shop by the end of summer! Do you need help planning your next school year? Are you looking to start your own hands on adventure? Check them out!
And as always, if you have any questions, don’t hesitate to contact me! I’m here to help!
Let the adventure begin!
